Dexter was born in Miami, Florida, in 1971. At age two, he witnessed his mother Laura's brutal murder at the hands of three drug dealers and was left for two days in a shipping container surrounded by dismembered body parts and sitting in a pool of blood. Harry Morgan, a police officer, adopted Dexter while Dexter's older brother Brian was left to the child welfare system. When Dexter was seven, Harry discovered the boy killing neighborhood pets and realized Dexter was a psychopath with an innate need to kill. Harry channeled those urges by teaching him "The Code" or "The Code of Harry": Dexter can only kill people after finding conclusive evidence they are guilty of murder, and he must not get caught. Dexter refers to his homicidal urges as his "Dark Passenger"; when he can no longer ignore his need to kill, he "lets the Dark Passenger do the driving." Harry died when Dexter was 20. In the second season, Sergeant James Doakes discovered that Dexter forsook a career in medicine to pursue blood spatter analysis despite being at the top of his class in medical school, and that Dexter studied advanced Jiu-Jitsu and was a black belt in college.

Dexter's novel appearances include Darkly Dreaming Dexter (2004), Dearly Devoted Dexter (2005), Dexter in the Dark (2007), Dexter by Design (2009), Dexter Is Delicious (2010), Double Dexter (2011), Dexter's Final Cut (2013), and Dexter Is Dead (2015). In 2006, the first novel was adapted into the Showtime TV series Dexter and its companion web series, Dexter: Early Cuts. The first season is largely based on Darkly Dreaming Dexter, but following seasons deviate substantially from the book series. For his performance, Hall received critical acclaim, winning the Golden Globe Award for Best Actor – Television Series Drama in 2009 and the TCA Award for Individual Achievement in Drama in 2007, and was nominated five times for the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series. He reprised his role in the miniseries Dexter: New Blood and the series premiere of the prequel Dexter: Original Sin, and portrays Dexter in the 2025 sequel series Dexter: Resurrection, which explores events following New Blood. In Dexter: Resurrection, after surviving his shooting, a physically weakened Dexter tracks his son Harrison to protect him after Harrison starts committing his own murders. As pointed out by Harry, Dexter has begun caring about other people for the first time, choosing to prioritize saving a killer's next victim over killing the man.

In season three, he deviates from his code to kill a pedophile stalking Rita's daughter Astor. Animals dislike Dexter; the novels reveal he once owned a dog that barked and growled until he got rid of it, and a turtle that hid from him until it starved. Dexter acknowledges loyalty to family, saying of Harry: "If I were capable of love, how I would have loved Harry." He admits he cannot hurt his sister Debra or allow anyone else to harm her because he is "fond of her," stating in season one: "I don't have feelings about anything, but if I could have feelings at all, I'd have them for Deb." After Rita's murder in season five, Dexter realizes he genuinely loved her. Later, he broke his code by killing non-killers, including police sergeant Logan—whose death was unintentional—showing no remorse. His last conversation with Harrison became a turning point: he accepted that he himself fit the Code and was just another cold-blooded murderer.
